We are in search of new leaders so we can grow the sizes of these groups and to deliver a great programme for our rangitahi. Becoming a leader requires a commitment each week, but it is incredibly rewarding helping our youth to achieve & grow.
What it means becoming a leader:
- Leaders complete the Leader warrant application on the website.
- In order to keep the children safe, all helpers or leaders need to complete a police check- this is automatically requested when you submit an application online.
- Leaders need to be able to lead a group of at least 6 children (independent of their own child) with use of the Scout Method. Your child will not always be with you, which gives them space to interact with others.
- Attend weekly meeting nights. Cover can be arranged if you need some time off, but this can impact others who need to cover for you.
- Help set up & pack up for meetings, do attendance register, do badge sign offs.
- Contribute to planning & plan/lead approximately 1-2 sessions per term.
- Be an active part of the leader team for your section.
- Contribute ideas & communicate using chosen methods (currently Facebook messenger group and emails)
- Attend & help at some weekend events each term.
- Complete initial leader training (Gilwell woggle) within 18 months.
- Adhere to Scouting NZ health and safety and child & youth protection policies.
- Support other leaders in your section and group.
Leader Advantages
- You see your child grow while doing new and fun activities. Usually you only get to hear about what your child did, whereas being a leader you can experience it with your child.
- You learn a lot of new things and experience new places that you didn’t know existed. It motivates you to get out where otherwise you would sit at home.
- You can go on outings such as camps, hikes and sleepovers and you get early access to numbers limited events where we can only take a certain amount of people.
- Leaders’ children receive discount on fees and you as leader do not pay for your activities. So only your child pays for an activity such as sleepover, but you do not.
- If there is a waiting list for keas/cubs/scouts, your child will get an immediate place in the session you choose. Others will need to wait for an opening.
